Alfred Birney (lahir di Den Haag, 1951)[1] merupakan seorang sastrawan keturunan Belanda, Jawa Timur, Cina, dan Skotlandia, yang memiliki nama keluarga Anglo-Saxon. Selain menulis novel-novel yang menempatkan konflik antarbudaya di dalam keluarga, Alfred Birney juga menulis novel, cerita pendek, kolom, esai, ulasan, drama, karya jurnalistik, dan materi didaktik tentang musik gitar.

Novelnya The Interpreter of Java menjadi buku terlaris resmi nomor satu selama empat minggu berturut-turut yang telah terjual lebih dari 130.000 eksemplar. Buku yang masih relevan hingga sekarang itu juga memenangkan Penghargaan Henriëtte Roland Holst dan Penghargaan Sastra Libris.[2]
