Angin Utara dan Matahari

Angin Utara dan Matahari adalah salah satu Fabel Aesop (Perry Index 46). Kisah tersebut berjenis 298 (Angin dan Matahari) dalam klasifikasi cerita rakyat Aarne-Thompson.[1] Moral yang diajarkan adalah tentang pengutamaan persuasi ketimbang paksaan yang membuat cerita tersebut banyak dikenal. Kisah tersebut juga dikenal karena menjadi teks pilihan untuk transkripsi fonetik.

Cerita dan aplikasi

Angin berusaha untuk mengoyak jubah seorang penjelajah, diilustrasikan oleh Milo Winter dalam sebuah antologi Aesop tahun 1919.
Matahari berhasil membuat penjelajah tersebut melepaskan jubahnya

Kisah tersebut mengisahkan sebuah kompetisi antara Angin Utara dan Matahari untuk memutuskan siapa yang terkuat dari keduanya. Tantangannya adalah membuat seorang penjelajah yang lewat melepaskan jubahnya. Hembusan Angin Utara yang keras hanya membuat penjelajah tersebut semakin menutupi jubahnya agar tetap hangat. Penjelajah tersebut pun kemudian kepanasan dan melepas jubahnya.

Fabel tersebut dikenal di Yunani Kuno; Athenaeus menyatakan bahwa Hieronymus dari Rhodes, dalam Catatan Sejarah-nya, mengutip sebuah epigram dari Sophocles terhadap Euripides yang memplesetkan cerita Helios dan Boreas.[2]
