Api Santa Elmo adalah sebuah fenomena cuaca langka di mana sebuah lucutan plasma yang sangat terang terbentuk akibat lucutan korona yang berasal dari objek dasar yang berlistik berbentuk atmosfer (seperti dalam badai petir atau badai listrik yang terbentuk akibat letusan gunung berapi).

Nama St. Elmo's Fire berasal dari Erasmus dari Formiae (yang juga dikenal sebagai St. Elmo), seorang santo pelindung dan pelaut. Fenomena ini muncul di kapalnya yang sedang dihadang badai petir, ia melihat fenomena ini dengan takjub, sehingga ia menamai fenomena ini dengan nama Api Santa Elmo.

Kilat bola kadang disalah artikan sebagai Api Santa Elmo. Walaupun mereka sebenarnya berbeda tetapi sama-sama merupakan fenomena meteorologi yang langka.[1]
