Asteroid tipe C ("C" untuk karbon, carbonaceous) adalah jenis asteroid paling umum, mencakup sekitar 75% dari seluruh asteroid yang telah diketahui.[1] Objek jenis ini kaya akan volatil dan dibedakan dengan albedo yang sangat rendah dikarenakan komposisi mereka yang mencakup banyak sekali karbon, selain bebatuan dan mineral. Asteroid tipe C emmiliki kepadatan rata-rata sekitar 1,7 g/cm3.

Asteroid jenis ini paling umum dijumpai di tepi luar sabuk asteroid, 35 au (5.200 juta km; 3.300 juta mi) dari Matahari, tempat 80% dari total asteroid di sana adalah tipe C. Sementara itu, tipe ini hanya mencakup 40% asteroid pada jarak 2 au (300 juta km; 190 juta mi) dari Matahari.[2] Proporsi asteroid tipe C barangkali lebih besar dari pada ini, karena asteroid tipe C jauh lebih redup (sehingga lebih sulit dideteksi) dari kebanyakan jenis asteroid lainnya, kecuali tipe D dan lainnya yang hadir di tepi luar ekstrem sabuk asteroid.
