Helmut Werner Bonsch, direktur perencanaan produk BMW, dan Alex von Falkenhausen, perancang mesin M10, masing-masing memiliki mesin dua liter yang dipasang di 1600-2 untuk penggunaan pribadi mereka masing-masing. Ketika mereka menyadari bahwa mereka berdua telah membuat modifikasi yang sama untuk mobil mereka sendiri, mereka pun menyiapkan proposal bersama untuk BMW untuk memproduksi 1600-2 versi dua liter. Pada saat yang sama, importir Amerika Max Hoffman meminta BMW untuk versi sport dari seri 02 yang dapat dijual di Amerika Serikat.

Mesin 1.990 cc tersedia pada tahun 1968 di dua negara dari: dasar single-karburator 2002 yang menghasilkan tenaga 100 bhp (75 kW; 101 PS) seperti pada 2000 dan 2000 C dan dual-karburator dengan kompresi tinggi 2002 ti yang memproduksi 120 bhp (89 kW; 122 PS) seperti pada 2000 TI dan 2000 CS. 2002 Automatic, dengan basis mesin dan transmisi otomatis, diluncurkan pada tahun 1969.
