Benggala adalah direktorat Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie di Benggala provinsi Mughal saat itu, antara tahun 1610 hingga perusahaan tersebut dilikuidasi pada tahun 1800. Direktorat ini kemudian menjadi koloni Kerajaan Belanda hingga tahun 1825, ketika koloni ini diserahkan kepada Britania Raya berdasarkan Traktat Inggris-Belanda 1824. Kehadiran Belanda di wilayah ini dimulai setelah pendirian pos perdagangan di Pipely. Koloni Belanda di Benggala merupakan bagian dari India Belanda.[1] India Belanda sendiri terdiri dari direktorat Benggala Belanda dan Suratte Belanda, komandemen Malabar Belanda dan kegubernuran Koromandel Belanda dan Sailan Belanda.
