Ringkasan cerita
Susan Fletcher adalah matematikawan jenius yang bekerja sebagai kepala divisi kriptografi National Security Agency (NSA). Fletcher berhadapan dengan kode yang tidak bisa dipecahkan oleh komputer super NSA. Kode ini ditulis oleh Ensei Tankado, kriptografer Jepang mantan anggota NSA, yang tidak senang dengan cara-cara NSA memata-matai privasi masyarakat. Tankado menjual kode ini di situs webnya, dan mengancam akan menyuruh temannya menyebarkan kode ini secara gratis apabila ia dibunuh.
Tankado kemudian ditemukan telah terbunuh di Sevilla, Spanyol. Fletcher bersama tunangannya, David Becker, seorang ahli bahasa yang memiliki ingatan eidetik, harus menemukan cara untuk menghentikan penyebaran kode ini.
