Bristol adalah sebuah karesidenan (county) di Inggris serta salah satu dari dua pusat administratif Inggris Barat Daya (satunya lagi adalah Plymouth). Sejak masa awal, perkembangannya terikat dengan Pelabuhan Bristol, pelabuhan komersial yang dahulu terletak di pusat kota, tetapi sekarang telah pindah ke pesisir Selat Bristol. Bristol meluas sampai ke pesisir tersebut dan termasuk Avonmouth, di mana banyak pelabuhan sekarang berada. Wilayah terkenal di dan sekitar kota termasuk Clifton, Filton dan Patchway (dua wilayah terakhir berada di luar koa, di South Gloucestershire).
Bristol adalah kota terpadat ke-8 di Inggris dan ke-11 di Britania Raya. Dia dulunya merupakan kota terbesar Inggris ke-2 setelah London, sampai pertumbuhan pesat Liverpool, Manchester dan Birmingham, pada dekade 1780-an.
