Carbonemys adalah salah satu genus kura-kura pelomedusoid yang sudah punah. Kura-kura ini telah hidup pada awal era Paleosen di Formasi Cerrejón, Colombia. Genus ini hanya terdiri dari satu spesies tunggal, yaitu Carbonemys cofrinii.[1]

Pada tahun 2005, sebuah spesimen fosil berumur 60 juta tahun ditemukan di area pertambangan batu bara Colombia. Fosil ini ditemukan oleh seorang mahasiswa doktoral dari Negara Bagian North Carolina yang bernama Edwin Cadena. Fosil tersebut memiliki sebuah tempurung berukuran sekitar 172 meter (564 ft), menjadikan hewan ini sebagai salah satu kura-kura terbesar di dunia.[2][3]

Mereka hidup lima juta tahun setelah peristiwa kepunahan massal spesies dinosaurus. Rahang mereka sangat besar dan kemungkinan cukup kuat untuk memangsa seekor buaya.[4]
