Dong-gu pertama kali muncul sebagai "kantor distrik timur" (동부 출장소) pada tahun 1938. Mencapai status gu pada tahun 1963. Pada tahun 1998, pembagian adminitsratif ditata kembali, dan mantan 26 dong ditata kembali sebagai 20 dong.
