Biografi

Kushner lahir pada 2 Maret 1945 dari pasangan Ann Gardner. Ia memiliki dua saudara perempuan.

Kushner bersekolah di tingkat menengah atas di Providence, Rhode Island, meraih gelar sarjana dari Universitas Syracuse pada 1971 dan gelar di Universitas Boston J.D. pada 1973. Ia kemudian belajar seni selama satu tahun di Firenze, Italia.

Sekembalinya ke Boston, Kushner membuka praktik hukum yang mencakup sejumlah klien dari dunia hiburan, yang pada akhirnya memberinya kesempatan untuk memproduksi drama panggung di Boston, termasuk P.S. Your Cat Is Dead dan adaptasi teater pertama dari Player Piano karya Kurt Vonnegut.
