Donald Ransom Whitney

Donald Ransom Whitney (27 November 1915 – 16 Agustus 2007[1]) adalah seorang matematikawan Amerika Serikat yang terkenal sebagai salah satu penulis uji U Mann-Whitney. Lahir di East Cleveland, Ohio, ia memperoleh gelar BA dari Oberlin College, tempat ia bertemu calon istrinya yakni Marian,[2] MA dalam Matematika dari Universitas Princeton, dan PhD dalam Matematika dari Universitas Negeri Ohio.[3] Dari tahun 1942 hingga 1946, Whitney bertugas di Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat, kemudian memperoleh gelar PhD dan bergabung dengan fakultas Matematika Universitas Negeri Ohio. Di sana ia berkolaborasi dengan Henry Mann dan keduanya segera menerbitkan artikel mereka yakni On a test of whether one of two random variables is stochastically larger than the other, Ann. Math. Stat. 18 (1947), 50-60, salah satu artikel yang paling banyak dikutip dalam statistika.[3]

Profesor Whitney mendirikan Laboratorium Statistika di Universitas Negeri Ohio, dan kemudian pada tahun 1970-an menjabat sebagai Ketua Statistika di sana. Beliau adalah penulis bersama atau penulis dari tiga buku teks dalam matematika dan statistika serta banyak artikel. Beliau adalah anggota American Statistical Association dan American Association for the Advancement of Science.[3]
