Edward Charles Stuart Baker CIE OBE FZS FLS (4 Oktober 1864 – 16 April 1944) adalah ahli burung Britania Raya dan juga seorang polisi.

Kehidupan dan karier

Baker berpendidikan di Trinity College, Stratford-upon-Avon dan pada 1883 ia mengikuti ayahnya di Kantor Polisi India. Ia menghabiskan hampir seluruh kariernya di India dalam Kepolisian Assam, dan naik pangkat ke Inspektur jenderal dan memimpin kepolisian tersebut. Pada 1910 ia menempati tugas Investigasi Khusus Kriminal. Pada 1911 ia kembali ke Inggris dan ditunjuk sebagai Kepala Petugas Kepolisian pada Bandar Kepolisian London, yang merupakan posisi terakhir sampai pensiunnya pada 1925. Karena jasa-jasanya yang berperan selama Perang Dunia Pertama, ia mendapat kehormatan Petugas Ordo Imperium Britania (OBE).[1] Setelah pensiun, ia menjadi Wali kota Croydon.

Ia merupakan pemain tenis yang handal dan seorang yang sangat berantusias dalam berburu hewan. Ia kehilangan lengan kanannya karena seekor macan tutul (di Silchar, Assam), dilempar seekor seladang (bison India) dan diinjak-injak Badak india dalam beberapa ekspedisinya.[2]

Dalam waktu luangnya, ia belajar dan mengoleksi burung India. Bukunya termasuk The Indian Ducks and their Allies (1908), Game Birds of India and Ceylon (1921), The Fauna of British India, Including Ceylon and Burma. Birds. (1922; seven volumes), Mishmi Man-eater (1928), The Nidification of the Birds of the Indian Empire (1932), and Cuckoo Problems (1942; the cuckoo was his chief interest within ornithology). Ia membuat koleksi yang komprehensif sekitar 50000 telur burung India, bagian yang ia sumbangkan ke Museum Sejarah Alam, yang ia banyak habiskan waktunya untuk mengumpulkan telur dari India dan Thailand. Karyanya yang berjumlah serial 7 volume itu The Fauna of British India, Including Ceylon and Burma menjadi karya referensi standar untuk bidang tersebut.[2] Sebagian koleksinya, sekitar 152 spesimen dijual ke museum privat Tzar Ferdinand I dari Bulgaria.[3] Dia juga bertugas di komite penasihat pemerintah pada perlindungan burung dan dari 1913-1936 menjadi sekretaris kehormatan dan bendahara Persatuan Ornitologis Britania.

Beberapa sarang dan telur dalam koleksinya dianggap dari sumber yang meragukan dan ada pendapat bahwa ia membuat beberapa sarang tiruan. Beberapa seperti Charles Vaurie betul-betul tidak yakin bahkan ada yang menyarankan agar koleksi telurnya dihancurkan.[4]
