Elihu Doty (20 September 1809 – 30 November 1864) adalah misionaris Amerika Serikat di Tiongkok. Ia merupakan penulis buku teks dialek Min Selatan pertama dalam bahasa Inggris. Ia dan John Van Nest Talmage diakui sebagai pencipta Peh-oe-ji, ortografi yang paling banyak digunakan untuk menulis dialek Min Selatan, tetapi asal-usul pastinya masih dipertanyakan.[1]

Misi awal

Doty tiba di Batavia (sekarang Jakarta) di Hindia Belanda pada tahun 1836 dan menghabiskan tiga tahun pertamanya sebagai misionaris di sana.[2] Ia kemudian menetap di Kalimantan pada tahun 1839 sampai 1844, lalu pindah ke Amoy (sekarang Xiamen) di Fujian, Tiongkok.

Misi di Amoy

Saat menetap di Amoy, Doty menulis Anglo Chinese Manual of the Amoy Dialect (1853), buku teks pertama tentang dialek Min Selatan.[1]
