Faktor pertumbuhan

Faktor pertumbuhan merupakan sekelompok protein yang berperan dalam mendorong pertumbuhan jaringan tertentu.[1] Molekul-molekul ini dapat memengaruhi laju pertumbuhan jenis sel tertentu melalui beberapa mekanisme, antara lain memperbesar ukuran sel dengan mendorong pembentukan molekul-molekul besar dan menghambat pemecahannya, meningkatkan jumlah sel dengan mempercepat pembelahan sel melalui aktivitas mitogen, serta memperpanjang kelangsungan hidup sel dengan mencegah kematian sel melalui proses apoptosis.[2]

Faktor pertumbuhan bekerja secara spesifik dengan berikatan pada reseptor di permukaan sel. Ikatan ini memocu rangkaian sinyal ke dalam sel, yang akhirnya mengubah ekspresi gen. Proses penyampaian sinyal ini disebut transduksi sinyal.[3]
