Hieroglif (diserap dari bahasa Yunani Kuno: Ιερογλυφικά, yang berarti "tulisan suci") adalah kumpulan karakter, simbol, atau logo berupa gambar yang pernah umum dipakai di peradaban-peradaban purba lainnya, yang terkenal yaitu Hieroglif Mesir. Umumnya Hieroglif Mesir disingkat hanya sebagai Hieroglif saja, karena merupakan jenis hieroglif yang paling lengkap dan terkenal.[1] Dalam Neoplatonisme, terutama selama Renaisans, "hieroglif" adalah representasi artistik dari sebuah gagasan esoterik, yang oleh para ahli Neoplatonis meyakini hieroglif Mesir sebenarnya. Kata hieroglif mengacu pada skrip hieroglif. Hanya mereka yang memiliki hak istimewa dengan pendidikan yang luas (yaitu Firaun, bangsawan dan para imam) dapat membaca dan menulis hieroglif; yang lain menggunakan versi 'gabungan' sederhana: skrip demotik dan hierarki.
