John Mbiti (1931-) lahir di Kutui,Kenya Afrika.[1] Ia mengenyam pendidikan di Universitas Makerere (Urganda), Barrington Collage (Rhode Island) dan Universitas Cambridge tempat ia meraih gelar doktor pada tahun 1963.[1] Disertasinya diterbitkan tahun 1971 dengan judul New Testament Theology in an African Background(Teologi perjanjian baru dengan latar belakang Afrika).[1] Tahun 1972 ia menjadi direktur Institut Oikumenis, Dewan Gereja-gereja se-Dunia di Celigny, Swiss.[1] Mbiti menulis beberapa buku yang mempelejari corak-corak kepercayaan tradisional di Afrika, seperti: African Religions and Philosophy(Kepercayaan dan Filsafat Afrika, 1969), Concepts of God in Africa(Konsep-konsep tentang Allah di Afrika, 1970), The Prayers of African (Doa-doa Agama Afrika, 1975), Bible and Theology in African Christianity (Alkitab dan Teologi Kekristenan Afrika, 1986).[1] Mbiti berpendapat Injil yang masuk ke dalam setiap kebudayaan sebagai orang asing, orang asing yeng menetap di sana.[1] Injil tidak membuang kebudayaan yang ada, sebaliknya Injil menetap di tengah-tengah kebudayaan tersebut dan memberi dampaknya terhadap orang-orang yang hidup dalam lingkungan kebudayaan tersebut.[1]
