John Robert Vane

John Robert Vane

Sir John Robert Vane (29 Maret 1927 – 19 November 2004) adalah farmakolog Britania Raya. Ayahnya adalah anak imigran Yahudi dari Rusia dan ibunya berasal dari keluarga pertanian Worcestershire. Ia dididik di King Edward's School, Edgbaston, Birmingham, dan belajar kimia di Universitas Birmingham pada 1944. Vane menyelesaikan S3 farmakologi dari Universitas Oxford pada 1953.

Ia memegang jabatan di Institute of Basic Medical Sciences Universitas London di Royal College of Surgeons of England selama 18 tahun. Selama masa itu ia mengembangkan teknik bioasai tertentu yang membuka penemuan ilmiah penting. Ia memenangkan Hadiah Nobel Kedokteran pada 1982 untuk karyanya pada aspirin yang ia temukan menghambat biosintesis prostaglandin. Hadiah itu diterimanya bersama Sune Bergstrom dan Bengt Samuelsson.

Pada 1973, Vane meninggalkan akademia dan mengambil kedudukan direktur riset di Wellcome Foundation. Namun 12 tahun kemudian ia kembali ke kehidupan akademik di William Harvey Research Institute, Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital (kini Barts and The London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry).
