Juke joint

Juke joint (juga disebut jukejoint, jook house, jook, atau juke) adalah istilah dalam bahasa sehari-hari Afrika-Amerika untuk menyebut tempat hiburan informal yang menampilkan musik, tari, perjudian, dan minuman keras, terutama dijalankan oleh orang Afrika-Amerika di Amerika Serikat bagian tenggara. Sebuah juke joint juga kadang disebut "barrelhouse". Juke joint merupakan arena budaya sekuler pertama yang muncul di kalangan freedmen. Juke joint klasik, misalnya yang terdapat di persimpangan jalan pedesaan, melayani para pekerja desa yang mulai muncul setelah Proklamasi Emansipasi.[1] Para pekerja perkebunan dan sharecroppers membutuhkan tempat untuk bersantai dan bersosialisasi setelah seminggu bekerja keras, terutama karena mereka dilarang masuk ke sebagian besar tempat milik orang kulit putih oleh hukum Jim Crow.
Biasanya didirikan di pinggiran kota, sering kali di bangunan reyot, kosong, atau rumah pribadi, juke joint menyediakan makanan, minuman, tari, dan perjudian bagi para pekerja yang lelah.[2] Pemiliknya biasanya menambah penghasilan dengan menjual bahan makanan atau moonshine kepada pengunjung, atau menyediakan kamar dan makan murah.
