Julius Robert von Mayer (25 November 1814 – 20 Maret 1878) adalah dokter dan fisikawan Jerman yang merupakan salah satu pemrakarsa termodinamika. Pada tahun 1841, ia mengucapkan pernyataan yang terkenal mengenai konservasi energi:[1][2]

Energi tidak dapat diciptakan maupun dimusnahkan.

Selama tahun 1842, Mayer mendeskripsikan proses kimia vital yang kini disebut oksidasi sebagai sumber utama energi untuk semua makhluk hidup.
