Mathilda

Mathilda, atau Matilda adalah judul sebuah novel karangan Mary Shelley yang ditulis pada sekitaran Agustus tahun 1819 sampai dengan Februari tahun 1820. Setelahnya, Mathilda berhasil pertama kali diterbitkan pada tahun 1959.[1] Novel ini membahas cerita dengan menggunakan tema romantisisme, mengenai hubungan sedarah dan bunuh diri. Kisah Mathilda sendiri mengisahkan mengenai sosok ayah yang memiliki ketertarikan hubungan sedarah dengan putrinya.

Latar belakang penulisan Mathilda

Proses penulisan novel Mathilda sendiri berlangsung ketika Mary Shelley berkabung dalam kesedihannya atas kematian putrinya Clara pada tahun 1818 di Venesia, dan juga putranya William pada tahun 1819 di Roma.[2] Kesedihan ini mengakibatkan Mary Shelley merasa depresi dan menjaga jarak hubungan terhadap Percy Shelley secara seksual dan emosional, lalu meninggalkannya.
