Mengandak adalah teknik mengurangi luas layar, biasanya dengan melipat atau menggulung salah satu tepi kanvas ke dalam dan menempelkan bagian yang tidak terpakai ke tiang atau penahan, sebagai tindakan utama untuk menjaga stabilitas kapal layar dalam angin kencang. [1]
Sedangkan kapal memiliki sistem layar depan-belakang menyimpan bagian layar yang tidak terpakai di pekaki layar, di bawah layar, kapal dengan sistem layar persegi menyimpan bagian yang tidak terpakai di tiang, di atas layar. Mengandak dapat terjadi dengan memutar layar di sekitar penjuru layar atau kaki layar, baik pada posisi berputar atau di dalam tiang.
