NGC 55 adalah jenis Magellan yang dibatasi galaksi spiral yang terletak sekitar 7 juta tahun cahaya di konstelasi Sculptor. Bersama dengan tetangganya NGC 300 itu adalah salah satu galaksi paling dekat dengan grup lokal, mungkin berbaring di antara kita dan grup sculptor.

Galaksi terdekat dan informasi grup

NGC 55 dan galaksi spiral NGC 300 secara tradisional telah diidentifikasi sebagai anggota dari grup sculptor, kelompok terdekat dari galaksi di konstelasi dengan nama yang sama. Bagaimanapun, pengukuran jarak baru-baru ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua galaksi sebenarnya terletak pada latar depan.[7]

Sangat mungkin bahwa NGC 55 dan NGC 300 membentuk pasangan gravitasi terikat.[4]

Webb Society Deep-Sky Observer's Handbook,[8] menulis demikian tentang NGC 55: "Hampir di dalam tepi dan muncul asimetris dengan beberapa tanda-tanda debu dekat tonjolan, yang menyebar, luas dan agak memanjang dengan ujung selatan tajam; tenggara dari tonjolan itu sangat melengkung dan berjajar dengan samar 4 atau 5 knot; tepi utara dengan kurva tajam." Burnham menyebutnya sebagai "salah satu galaksi yang luar biasa dari langit selatan", agak menyerupai versi lebih kecil dari Large Magellenic Cloud.[9]
