Nekroptosis adalah salah satu bentuk nekrosis atau kematian sel inflamasi.[1] Secara konvensional, nekrosis berhubungan dengan kematian sel yang tidak terprogram yang terjadi akibat kerusakan sel atau infiltrasi oleh patogen, yang membedakannya dengan kematian sel terprogram via apoptosis. Pada proses nekroptosis terlihat bahwa sel dapat memprogram kematiannya dan juga menunjukkan bahwa kematian sel tidak selalu berupa apoptosis. Lebih lanjut, sifat imunogenik bawaan dari nekroptosis membuatnya hanya terlibat dalam keadaan-keadaan tertentu seperti membantu untuk perlindungan terhadap patogen lewat mekanisme sistem imun. Nekroptosis didefinisikan sebagai mekanisme pertahanan terhadap virus yang memungkinkan sel melakukan proses bunuh diri di tingkat seluler melalui mekanisme inhibisi enzim protease virus untuk membatasi replikasi virus.[2] Nekroptosis dikarakterisasi sebagai komponen penyakit inflamasi seperti penyakit Crohn, pankreatitis, dan infark miokardium.[3][4]
