Oksigenase adalah sebuah enzim yang berfungsi untuk mengoksidasi substrat dengan mengirim oksigen dari oksigen molekuler O2. Oksigenase membentuk sebuah kelas oksireduktase; nomor EC mereka yaitu EC 1.13 atau EC 1.14. Oksigenase pertamakali ditemukan secara bersamaan pada 1955, oleh dua kelompok, yaitu Osamu Hayaishi dari Jepang[1][2][3] dan Howard S. Mason dari Amerika Serikat.[4][5]

Struktur

Kebanyakan oksigenase mengandung baik sebuah logam, umumnya besi, atau sebuah kofaktor organik, umumnya flavin. Kofaktor ini berinteraksi dengan O2, membawanya ke subtrat.[6] Enzim ini merupakan sumber utama intrasel besi dan karbon monoksida.[7]
