Opera seria atau melodramma serio adalah istilah musik bahasa Italia untuk jenis opera Italia yang "serius", yang terkenal di Eropa dari tahun 1720-an sampai sekitar 1770. Istilah ini digunakan saat opera seria tidak lagi populer, untuk membedakan dari opera buffa, jenis opera komedi yang berasal dari commedia dell'arte.

Opera seria tidak hanya dihasilkan di Italia, tetapi juga di Habsburg Austria, Inggris, Dresden, Spanyol, dan lain-lain. Pencipta opera seria antara lain Johann Adolf Hasse, Leonardo Vinci, George Frideric Handel, Tommaso Traetta, Gluck, dan Mozart.

Zaman opera seria muncul bersamaan dengan zaman castrati, yaitu penyanyi laki-laki yang dikastrasi sebelum akil balik untuk mempertahankan suara soprano atau alto mereka. Salah satu yang paling terkenal adalah Farinelli, yang memulai kariernya pada 1722 dibantu oleh Nicola Porpora. Saingan utama Farinelli adalah Senesino.
