Oppidum
Oppidum (dari bahasa Latin oppidum, jamak oppida, yang berarti "kota") adalah istilah yang mengacu kepada permukiman yang terbentengi di Eropa barat dan tengah pada Zaman Besi.[1] Oppidum merupakan pusat ekonomi, politik atau religius yang terlindungi secara alami karena biasanya terletak di tempat tinggi, pulau, semenanjung, tanjung, liku-liku sungai, atau rawa-rawa. Oppida Keltik mengalami zaman keemasan pada abad ke-2 SM dan ke-1 SM dan mereka disebut peradaban oppida. Setelah Romawi menaklukan Galia, banyak oppida yang ditinggalkan sementara yang lain berkembang menjadi kota besar seperti Bourges (Avaricum) atau Besançon (Vesontio). Pada abad pertengahan, beberapa oppida diduduki kembali (seperti oppidum Saint-Blaise) dan oppida lain dijadikan tempat mengungsi Meroliacense atau Chastel-Marlhac).
