Orang kaya

Orang kaya atau orang kaja adalah gelar tradisional di Nusantara. Gelar ini telah digunakan selama berabad-abad di berbagai wilayah di Semenanjung Malaya dan Kepulauan Melayu, sehingga makna dari gelar ini sendiri berbeda-beda.[1]

Selayang pandang

Gelar "orang kaya" dapat ditemui di Maluku, termasuk di Kepulauan Banda dan Kepulauan Leti.[2] Orang kaya di Kepulauan Banda dapat dideskripsikan sebagai oligarki pedagang di masyarakat kesukuan.[3]

Sementara itu, di bagian barat Kepulauan Melayu, orang kaya tunduk kepada kekuasaan sultan dan merupakan bagian dari struktur perdagangan. Dalam konteks ini, orang kaya merupakan sebuah kelas sosial tersendiri.[3]

Di Kesultanan Aceh, orang kaya merupakan bangsawan kaya yang juga menjadi pejabat negara.[4]
