Order of Burma didirikan oleh Surat Kerajaan Inggris pada 10 Mei 1940, dan diberikan hanya dalam satu kelas saja. Penghargaan ini diberikan oleh Gubernur Burma Britania kepada para pejabat kegubernuran (yaitu orang Burma asli), Perwira di Angkatan Darat Burma, Pasukan Perbatasan Burma dan Polisi Militer Burma atas masa bakti yang panjang, setia dan terhormat.[1] Pada bulan September 1945 surat kerajaan diubah dengan mengizinkan penambahan pemberian penghargaan untuk keberanian.[2]
