Kerangas dalam istilah bahasa Inggris, yaitu "heath" merupakan sebuah habitat lahan perdu atau semak belukar yang biasanya ditemukan di wilayah bebas drainase, tanah asam dan dikarakterisasikan oleh vegetasi perdu yang luas. Lahan tandus atau kering (bahasa Inggris: moorland) umumnya dikenal sebagai lahan kosong di dataran tinggi[1] dengan iklim yang lebih dingin dan lembap, khususnya di Britania Raya.

Ciri-Ciri Utama Kerangas

  1. Tanah Podsol yang Miskin Nutrisi
    • Tanah kerangas bersifat asam, berpasir, dan memiliki lapisan spodosol atau podzol yang miskin unsur hara.[2]
    • Kondisi ini menyebabkan hanya tumbuhan tertentu yang mampu beradaptasi, seperti jenis-jenis Dipterocarpaceae tertentu dan tanaman karnivora (Nepenthes).
  2. Vegetasi yang Khas
    • Pohon-pohonnya cenderung pendek dengan daun kecil dan keras (sclerophyllous) untuk mengurangi penguapan.[3]
    • Banyak ditemukan epifit (anggrek, lumut), serta tumbuhan endemik seperti Tristaniopsis dan Gymnostoma.
