Pemacu detak adalah alat pacu detak jantung dan langsung mengontrol detak jantung.[1] Kontraksi jantung (cardiac) otot pada semua hewan dengan hati dimulai oleh impuls listrik.[1] Pada manusia, dan kadang-kadang pada hewan, alat mekanis yang disebut alat pacu jantung buatan (atau hanya "alat pacu jantung") dapat digunakan setelah kerusakan pada sistem konduksi intrinsik tubuh untuk menghasilkan impuls sintetis.[1]

Simpul sinoatrial (SA node) adalah sekelompok sel ditempatkan pada dinding atrium kanan, dekat pintu masuk vena kava superior.[2] Sel-sel ini diubah kardiomiosit.[2] Mereka memiliki filamen kontraktil dasar, tetapi kontraksinya relatif lemah.[2]

Sel-sel dalam SA node secara spontan berdepolarisasi, sehingga kontraksi sekitar 100 kali per menit.[2] Tingkat asli ini terus dimodifikasi oleh aktivitas simpatis dan parasimpatis serat saraf, sehingga tingkat jantung istirahat rata-rata pada manusia dewasa adalah sekitar 70 denyut per menit.[2] Karena simpul sinoatrial bertanggung jawab untuk sisa aktivitas listrik jantung, kadang-kadang disebut alat pacu jantung utama.[1]
