Perangkat null

Pada beberapa sistem operasi, perangkat null adalah berkas perangkat khusus yang mementahkan semua data yang masuk ke dalamnya tetapi mengindikasikan bahwa operasi penulisan telah sukses dilaksanakan. Perangkat ini dinamai /dev/null pada Unix dan sistem yang mirip dengannya, NUL: atau NUL pada DOS dan CP/M, nul pada sistem operasi Windows yang terbaru ( \Device\Null pada Windows NT), NIL: pada Amiga, dan NL: pada OpenVMS. Pada PowerShell, bandingannya adalah $null.

Perangkat tersebut akan memberikan EOF ketika sebuah proses membaca isi perangkat tersebut.[1] Perangkat null biasa digunakan untuk memusnahkan keluaran yang tidak diinginkan dari sebuah proses yang sedang berjalan.

Dalam jargon pemrogram, terutama jargon Unix, perangkat tersebut dijuluki ember bit atau lubang hitam.

Sejarah

Merujuk pada halaman man Berkeley Unix, Versi 7 Unix memasukkan fitur perangkat null.[2] AT&T merilis Versi 7 Unix pada 1979.[3]
