Periode glasial

Periode glasial adalah waktu suhu menurun dalam jangka masa yang lama dalam iklim bumi, menyebabkan peningkatan dalam keluasan es di kawasan kutub dan gletser gunung. Sisa lautan yang ada tidak tertutupi es tetapi memiliki suhu tertinggi rata-rata sekitar 40 C. Secara geologis, zaman es sering digunakan untuk merujuk kepada waktu lapisan es di belahan bumi utara dan selatan; dengan denifisi ini kita masih dalam zaman es. Menurut para ahli zaman ini telah terjadi berulang kali dengan diselingi masa-masa yang lebih hangat yang disebut masa interglasial. Pada zaman es air laut membeku sehingga permukaan air laut turun sampai 100 meter dan garis pantai pun menjorok ke laut kemungkinan ada beberapa pulau menyatu saat zaman es tersebut. Periode glasial terakhir berakhir sekitar 15,000 tahun yang lalu[1]
