Dalam sejarah, periode modern awal dari sejarah modern terjadi setelah akhir Abad Pertengahan dari era pasca-klasik. Meskipun batas-batasan kronologi dari periode tersebut diperdebatkan, frame waktu menjalankan periode tersebut setelah bagian akhir zaman pasca-klasik (akhir tahun 1400-an), yang dikenal sebagai Abad Pertengahan, meskipun permulaan Abad Revolusi (sekitar 1800) dan berbagai batas-batasnnya dibuat oleh sejarawan sebagai permulaan dengan Jatuhnya Konstantinopel pada 1453, dengan periode Renaisans, dan dengan Abad Penemuan (khususnya dengan perjalanan Christopher Columbus yang dimulai pada 1492, tetapi juga dengan penemuan rute laut ke dunia Timur pada 1498), dan berakhir sekitar masa Revolusi Prancis pada 1789.
