Permabooks adalah divisi buku kertas dari Doubleday, didirikan oleh Doubleday pada tahun 1948. Meskipun diterbitkan oleh Garden City Publishing Company milik Doubleday di Garden City, Long Island, kantor editorial Permabooks terletak di 14 West 49th Street di Manhattan.
Dipromosikan dengan slogan-slogan Buku Nilai Permanen untuk Penggunaan Permanen dan Buku untuk Dipertahankan, Permabooks awal dijual dengan harga 35 sen. Mereka tidak memiliki sampul fleksibel yang biasanya terkait dengan buku kertas. Sebagai gantinya, sesuai dengan namanya, Permabooks pertama dirancang dalam format yang lebih tahan lama dengan sampul papan. Bagian dalamnya terlihat seperti buku kertas, tetapi bagian luar, yang berukuran lebar 4⅜" dan tinggi 6½", memberikan kesan buku keras ukuran yang lebih kecil. Ujung sampul papan yang kaku dan tidak fleksibel ini meluas 1/8" melewati potongan halaman interior.[1]
