Pertunangan merupakan masa peralihan antara lamaran dengan pernikahan. Biasanya dalam pertunangan terdapat tradisi saling memberikan hadiah. Tradisi pertunangan berbeda menurut suku, agama, dll, misalnya di India Barat pasangan itu saling tukar anak angsa, sementara wanita Tiongkok pada awal abad ke-20 dituntut memberikan hadiah yang pas bagi calon suaminya dalam waktu seminggu setelah pertunangan, kalau tidak mau pernikahannya kandas.
