Peter David Lax (1 Mei 1926 – 16 Mei 2025) adalah seorang matematikawan Amerika Serikat kelahiran Hungaria dan penerima Hadiah Abel yang bekerja di bidang matematika murni dan terapan.
Lax telah memberikan kontribusi penting pada sistem terpadu, dinamika fluida dan gelombang kejut, fisika solitonik, hukum konservasi hiperbolik, dan komputasi matematika dan ilmiah, di antara bidang-bidang lainnya.
Dalam sebuah makalah tahun 1958, Lax menyatakan sebuah dugaan tentang representasi matriks untuk polinomial hiperbolik orde ketiga yang tidak terbukti selama lebih dari empat dekade.
