Philip Astley
Philip Astley (8 Januari 1742 – 20 Oktober 1814) merupakan seorang penunggang kuda berkebangsaan Inggris, pemilik sirkus, dan penemu. Ia dianggap sebagai "bapak sirkus modern". Sirkus modern, sebagai pengalaman hiburan terintegrasi yang mencakup musik, hewan peliharaan, akrobat, dan badut, ditelusuri warisannya ke amfiteater Astley, sebuah fasilitas berkuda yang didirikan Astley di London menyusul keberhasilan pertunjukan trik berkuda yang dipertunjukkan olehnya dan istrinya Patty Jones pada tahun 1768.[1] Pesaing pertama Astley adalah seorang penunggang berkuda yang bernama Charles Hughes, yang sebelumnya bekerja dengan Astley. Bersama dengan Charles Dibdin, seorang penulis pantomim, Hughes membuka sebuah amfiteater saingan di London, yang disebut Dibdin Teater Surrey.[2]
