Polidokanol adalah komponen anestesi lokal dan antipruritik dari salep dan aditif mandi. Senyawa ini meredakan gatal yang disebabkan oleh eksem dan kulit kering.[2] Senyawa ini juga telah digunakan untuk mengobati varises,[3] hemangioma, dan malformasi vaskular.[4] Senyawa ini dibentuk oleh etoksilasi dodekanol.

Skleroterapi

Polidokanol juga digunakan sebagai sklerosan, iritan yang disuntikkan untuk mengobati varises.[5] Polidokanol menyebabkan fibrosis di dalam varises, menyumbat lumen pembuluh darah, dan mengurangi tampilan varises.

FDA telah menyetujui suntikan polidokanol untuk pengobatan varises kecil (berdiameter kurang dari 1 mm) dan vena retikuler (berdiameter 1 hingga 3 mm). Polidokanol bekerja dengan merusak lapisan sel pembuluh darah, menyebabkannya menutup dan akhirnya digantikan oleh jenis jaringan lain.[6][7] Polidokanol yang disuntikkan ke vena saphena mayor dapat menyebabkan erupsi varises dan vena laba-laba di seluruh tungkai bawah. Prosedur ini harus dilakukan dengan hati-hati dan dengan pengetahuan bahwa penampilan kaki dapat terganggu selamanya.
