Producers Guild of America Award aslinya didirikan pada 1990 oleh Producers Guild of America sebagai Golden Laurel Awards, dibuat oleh bendahara PGA Joel Freeman dengan dukungan dari Presiden Guild Leonard Stern, dalam rangka menghormati para visiuner yang memproduksi dan membuat film dan produk televisi.
