Protoraks kumbang

Protoraks adalah yang paling depan di antara tiga segmen toraks serangga. Bagian ini menyandang pasangan kaki pertama serangga. Sklerit (lempeng eksoskeleton) utamanya adalah protonum (dorsal), prosternum (ventral) dan propleuron (lateral) pada tiap sisi. Pada jenis-jenis serangga yang masih sintas, protoraks tidak pernah menyandang sayap (kecuali dalam beberapa kasus atavisme), meski beberapa kelompok fosil memiliki struktur mirip sayap di protoraksnya.[1] Semua serangga dewasa menyandang kaki di protoraksnya, meski pada beberapa kelompok (seperti pada famili kupu-kupu Nymphalidae) kaki depannya sangat mengecil. Dalam banyak kelompok serangga, protonumnya berukuran kecil, dan sedikit dari mereka ter-hipertrofi, seperti pada semua kumbang (Coleoptera). Pada kebanyakan pelompat pohon (famili Membracidae, ordo Hemiptera), protonumnya membesar membentuk wujud-wujud mencolok yang membantu kemampuan kamuflase atau mimikri mereka. Serupa dengan hal tersebut, pada Tetrigidae, protonumnya memanjang ke belakang untuk menutupi sayap terbangnya, menggantikan fungsi tegmina.
