Relaksin adalah sebuah hormon protein hormone berkadar sekitar 6000 Da[1] yang pertama kali dideskripsikan pada tahun 1926 oleh Frederick Hisaw.[2][3] Keluarga peptida seperti relaksin masuk dalam keluarga besar insulin dan terdiri dari 7 peptidal berstruktur tinggi tetapi kesamaan urutannya rendah; relaxin-1 (RLN1), 2 (RLN2) and 3 (RLN3), dan peptida-peptida mirip insulin (INSL), INSL3, INSL4, INSL5 dan INSL6. Fungsi relaxin-3, INSL4, INSL5, dan INSL6 masih belum dikarakterisasikan.[4]
