Rhynchospora adalah genus yang terdiri dari sekitar 400 spesies Cyperaceae dengan distribusi kosmopolitan. Genus ini mencakup spesies musiman dan tahunan, sebagian besar dengan batang tegak 3 sisi dan daun 3 tingkat. Buah kurungnya memiliki tuberkel seperti paruh dan terkadang ditutupi oleh bulu sikat. Banyak spesies yang serupa dalam penampilan vegetatif, dan buah yang matang diperlukan untuk membuat identifikasi positif.[1] [2]

Bunga majemuk (spikelet) terkadang ditutupi oleh daun pelindung yang bisa menyerupai daun atau mencolok.[3][4]

Anggota genus ini memiliki kromosom holosentris dan telah menjadi model untuk studi evolusi kromosom dan rekombinasi meiosis pada tumbuhan holosentris.[5] Genom Rhynchospora pubera, Rhynchospora breviuscula, dan Rhynchospora tenuis telah dipublikasikan pada tahun 2022.[6]
