SMP Negeri 1 Purworejo merupakan Sekolah Standar Nasional yang berdiri sejak tahun 1942. Dahulu sekolah ini bernama HBS (Hogere Burger School), yaitu sekolah lanjutan tinggi pertama untuk warga probumi dengan lama belajar 5 tahun. Seiring dengan kemerdekaan Indonesia, HBS kemudian diganti dengan Sekolah Rakyat. Berturut-turut berganti nama, Sekolah Lanjutan Pertama hingga Sekolah Menengah Pertama.
