Salona adalah kota Dalmatia Illyria kuno pada milenium pertama SM.[1] Orang Yunani mendirikan sebuah emporion (pasar) di sana.[2] Setelah ditaklukan oleh Romawi, Salona menjadi ibu kota provinsi Romawi, Dalmatia.[3] Ketika Kaisar Romawi Diocletianus pensiun, dia mendirikan sebuah istana monumental di dekatnya; bangunan besar tersebut, yang dikenal sebagai Istana Diocletianus, menjadi pusat kota Split modern. Pada masa sekarang Salona (atau Salon) teretak di dekat kota Solin modern (dekat Split).

Salona rusak berat setelah diinvasi oleh bangsa Avar dan Slavia pada tahun 614. Bangsa Romawi sendiri kembali menempati Istana Diocletianus pada tahun 639.[4]
