Semester adalah istilah penanggalan dalam bahasa Latin yang terdiri atas sex atau six (enam) dan menstrues atau mensis (bulan) yang memiliki makna enam bulan berturut-turut. Istilah ini sering digunakan dalam periode paruh tahun ajaran pendidikan.
Dalam penanggalan Gregorian, Semester dapat dihitung pada periode pertama: sejak bulan Januari hingga Juni (181/182 hari) dan periode kedua: Juli hingga Desember (184 hari).
