Sepoy

Sepoy (/ˈsiːpɔɪ/) awalnya adalah sebuah gelar pemberian yang diberikan kepada seorang prajurit India. Pada masa modern, Angkatan Darat Nepal, Angkatan Darat India, Angkatan Darat Pakistan dan Angkatan Darat Bangladesh masih menggunakan pangkat tersebut untuk prajurit privat.[1]

Etimologi

Istilah "sepoy" berasal dari kata Persia sepāhī (سپاهی) yang artinya "prajurit infanteri" dalam Kekaisaran Mughal. Di Kekaisaran Utsmaniyah, istilah Sipahi digunakan untuk merujuk kepada pasukan kavaleri.[2]
