Candi Orang Kayo Hitam pertama kali ditemukan pada 1999, dan mulai dilakukan ekskavasi pada 2000 dan 2001. Pada 1999 dilaporkan pula penyerta temuan lainnya berupa sejumlah keramik asing dan sebuah tangan arca. Kemudian pada 2006 ditemukkan lagi reruntuhan bata kuno. Secara administrasi, Situs Orang Kayo Hitam terletak di Desa Simpang, Kecamatan Berbak, Kabupaten Tanjung jabung Timur, Provinsi Jambi.[1]
