Stephen Allen Benson (21 Mei 1816 – 24 Januari 1865) adalah seorang politikus Liberia yang menjabat sebagai Presiden Liberia kedua dari tahun 1856 hingga 1864. Sebelumnya, ia menjabat sebagai wakil presiden ketiga Liberia dari tahun 1854 hingga 1856 di bawah kepemimpinan Presiden Joseph Jenkins Roberts. Lahir di Amerika Serikat, Benson adalah presiden pertama yang tinggal di Liberia sejak kecil, tiba bersama keluarganya pada tahun 1822.

Kehidupan awal

Benson lahir di Cambridge, Maryland, Amerika Serikat, dari orang tua keturunan Afrika-Amerika.[1][2] Pada tahun 1822, keluarganya beremigrasi ke negara yang baru didirikan Liberia, berlayar dengan kapal Brig Strong.[3]

Benson menikah dengan Nancy Moore pada tahun 1841.[4] Pada tahun 1842 ia menjadi delegasi Dewan Kolonial. Setelah kemerdekaan Liberia pada tahun 1847 ia menjadi hakim. Dia juga seorang pengkhotbah Metodis. Benson adalah Menteri Keuangan sebelum menjadi presiden.[5]
