Strychnos adalah sebuah genus tumbuhan berbunga milik keluarga Loganiaceae (kadang-kadang Strychnaceae). Genus ini mencakup sekitar 100 spesies pohon dan liana yang diterima, dan lebih dari 200 spesies yang belum selesai dideskripsikan.[1] Genus ini tersebar luas di seluruh daerah tropis dunia dan terkenal karena adanya alkaloid indol beracun di akar, batang, dan daun pada berbagai spesiesnya. Di antara alkaloid ini adalah racun striknina dan curare yang terkenal dan mematikan.

Etimologi

Namanya diterapkan oleh Plinius Tua dalam bukunya Naturalis Historia untuk ranti (Solanum nigrum). Kata ini berasal dari bahasa Yunani Kuno στρύχνον (strúkhnon) yakng artinya "tajam" atau "pahit". Arti kata strychnos tidak tetap di Yunani Kuno, di mana kata tersebut dapat merujuk pada berbagai tumbuhan berbeda yang memiliki sifat toksisitas yang sama.[2]
